Fads Fade, Style Evolves: Navigating Modern Interior Design Trends

At Studio Croft, I believe great design is about more than just following what’s "in." It’s about understanding the lifecycle of trends, recognizing fads for what they are, and knowing how to create spaces that feel fresh yet enduring. As an expert in forward-thinking interiors with enduring style, I specialize in guiding homeowners in making creative, yet lasting design choices.

The Lifecycle of Interior Design: What is a Trend vs. a Fad?

Trends and fads follow a predictable cycle, picture it as a bell curve. It starts with innovators—designers and artists experimenting with fresh ideas—followed by early adopters who bring these styles to the forefront. By the time the general public see these looks in major shelter magazines or at mass retailers, they’re likely on the downhill slope, already being phased out by design leaders looking ahead to the next big thing.

  • Trends tend to last longer (think five to ten years) and often evolve rather than disappear entirely.

  • Fads, on the other hand, burn brightly but briefly—usually lasting only a season or two before feeling dated.

I covered this in detail in my Modern Interior Design Trends for 2022 video (watch here), where I explained how trends and fads move through the industry and why it’s important to be aware of them.

Why Is It Important to Stay Informed on Interior Design Trends?

Even if you prefer classic, timeless design, keeping up with trends is essential. As a designer, I track the shifts happening at industry markets and events, in interviews and presentations by cutting-edge design studios, and among early adopters.

This allows me to:

  • Understand the interior design landscape. Trends shape what’s available in the market, from furniture to finishes.

  • Know what’s next in interior design. Watching early adopters helps me anticipate shifts before they become mainstream.

  • Make intentional design choices. Being aware of what’s trendy helps me decide where to incorporate statement pieces and where to stay classic.

The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live.

Where Should You Consider Using Trendy or Fad Pieces in Your Home?

Not every trendy element needs to be avoided—strategic use of trend-driven decor can elevate a space without making it feel overly tied to a particular moment in time. Here’s how I guide my clients:

  • Decor & Accessories – Throw pillows, rugs, and artwork are great for incorporating a trend without long-term commitment.

  • Lighting Fixtures – If chosen wisely, a trendy lighting piece can be swapped out when styles shift. My 5 Trends from the Lightovation Summer Lighting Show (read here) showcases what's new in lighting.

  • Accent Walls & Paint Colors – A fresh coat of paint in a trending color is one of the easiest ways to update a space without major investment. However, single accent walls are giving way to creatively accenting the ceiling plane and color drenching! Check out my 2024 Color Trends from Summer Market (read here) for inspiration.

What Is The Foundation of Enduring Interior Design?

At Studio Croft, I approach sophisticated modern design not as a rejection of trends and fads, but as a way to create spaces that stand the test of time—much like the best mid-century interiors that still feel relevant today. Here’s what I prioritize:

  • Quality Over Quantity – I guide my clients to invest in well-made furniture and finishes that won’t feel outdated in a few years. We focused on 4 Steps to Making a Furniture Purchase You Won’t Regret in this post.

  • Creating a Base with Layered Personality – A neutral color palette provides flexibility while allowing room for evolving personal style.

  • Iconic Silhouettes & Materials – Natural materials like wood, stone, and linen never go out of style, especially when paired with iconic forms and textures of furniture pieces from influential modernist designers of the 20th century.

  • A Thoughtful Balance of Modern & Vintage – Mixing contemporary and classic pieces creates a design that feels collected rather than stuck in one era.
