White Bird by Jim Weitzel

Artists Statement:  "Like my other sculptures, White Bird is an example of my desire to create works that have references to other cultures. This piece is about native American culture in the context of influences from early interaction with Europeans.  It's easy to see that this sculpture has a bird like appearance, with its face and extended claw, it also has forward motion as if to take flight and the edge has a wave shape to mimic feathers. Also, all the edges have hundreds of dots that are banged-in with a hammer and punch. As I hammered each dot I repeated this mantra, 'strong spirit, strong mind, strong heart'. This was an effort to imbue the piece with this energy."

Materials: Welded Steel with patina, Wood

Dimensions: 79" H X 30" L X 20" W
