Slumbering in Style: A Kids’ Bunk Room Reveal
I have another great room reveal to share with you! This time Studio Croft has been working on a special space for three sweet sisters who share a bedroom.
Multiple kids sharing one bedroom? This space was just begging for the opportunity to design a custom bunk room, so we did! Read on and see how we transformed this ordinary bedroom with custom built-in bunks, lighting automation, personalized storage, bright colors and bold patterns!
The Design Process
I started with several possible design concepts for this bunk room. After a detailed assessment (more about that here), full site measure and careful planning, we opted to go for a configuration of two stacked bunks with a pull-out trundle bed and a single bed on the side. Due to space constraints with the closet, which runs the full length of the room, we choose an angled ladder to get up to the top bunk without impeding closet access.
The next step was to get our custom millwork shop* involved to finalize the construction details. I worked with them to coordinate the correct mattress sizing, lighting and electrical integration, concealed drapery tracks and finish materials. They built and finished the bunk bed in their shop. Then they delivered and installed it on-site in the span of two days, so there was minimal impact for this family.
*A BIG thank you to the team at Conroe Fabrication & Woodworks for their stellar work on this project.
Material & Finish Selections
Construction details are only part of the process. The materials and finishes are what is seen and touched each and every day. They are the truly special details that give a custom designed space it’s own unique character.
We endeavored to craft a delightful and functional space for these young ladies that matched the clean, modern aesthetic of the rest of the home. We kept it simple enough to easily transition to a more mature room as they grow.
The built-in bunk beds have a clean, white painted finish with walnut veneer accents. The walnut trim is a special detail that coordinates with other custom millwork throughout this modern home. The paint has a special catalyzed finish for durability, similar to what is used on painted cabinetry.
Our seamstress created made-to-measure, operable drapery panels for each bunk. The drapery panels feature custom printed fabric which was hand selected for this project to coordinate with the bedding, rug and accents.
Bright colors, bold patterns and fun prints bring this space to life!
Home Automation
We brought home automation technology into this room by carefully working with the carpenters to integrate power and lighting into the custom bunk beds.
Personal lighting control at the two bunks gives each child access to a reading light and night light. They can choose any color on the RGB spectrum and adjust the brightness to their liking, as often as they want. Each controller has several presets for their favorite settings.
In a home with children it is especially important to have cordless window treatments for safety. Here we specified an automated blackout shade to support nap time and night time. The window shade works on a wireless mesh network with other shades in the home. It is controlled via a smart device or handheld remote.
The Finished Bunk Room
The end result is a fun, functional and colorful space to play or drift away to dreamland!
We added storage with a custom built-in toy drawer. Each bunk has privacy with custom ripple fold drapery hung from concealed tracks. Shelves at the head of each bed offer space for books and an alarm clock or displaying personal trinkets and treasures. Wall mounted pin boards are perfect for showing off photos and artwork. There is even room for a guest on the pull out trundle bed.
